Ruben the Road Safety Bear Comes to Visit

 

Yesterday we had a surprise visit from Ruben. He had visited earlier in the year so this was an opportunity to reinforce the road safety messages of Stop, Look, Listen and Link, making seat belts and helmets click, sneaky driveways as well as crossing the road safely.

 

 

This was a really interactive experience for the children using song and actions to reinforce these important messages in a fun way. It was great to hear the children's awareness and knowledge of road safety by their responses to questions that they were asked, some of who had been involved in the previous session with Ruben.

 

 

Some children practiced Stop, Look, Listen and Link with Ruben using the zebra crossing.

Nature Discovery at Sharda

Louise has been requesting that we make a cake at Nature Discovery, so today we decided to give it a go. Alex, Caitlin, Jack, Sacha and Taylor all had a go at cracking our chickens eggs into the mix.

Louise was keen to give it a stir once the delicious chocolate mix was added, we all thought it smelt yummy. Caitlyn very kindly held the bowl for Louise. Once the cake was mixed we went off exploring to the climbing trees. The children really enjoy paddling in all the puddles and climbing the tree with the 'slide'.

 

Then it was time to head back to camp and cook our chocolate brownie. We had to be very patient and wait for the fire to burn down before we could put the camp oven on the tri pod. The brownie took a long time to cook.

 
                              

But once it was done we all agreed it was worth the wait...yummy.

Yummy Blueberry Rolls

We have had a few requests for cakes to be cooked in the camp oven on the fire, so we thought we would give blueberry rolls a try.

Ryan was a keen starter, he enjoyed mixing and kneading all the ingredients together. It was a bit of a squash to get all the rolls into the camp oven.

Ryan had some helpers to carry the oven to the fire.

It was hung from the tripod and then we had to wait...a long time.

 After checking it a couple of times it was finally time to do a taste test, Cassandra carefully tipped it out of the camp oven, it looked and smelt amazing.

We sold our yummy treat in our Kai Café, it was very popular with some children having seconds. Ryan thought it was delicious! There was even enough for Ryan to take a little home to share with his whanau. I wonder what we will try next.

Nature Discovery at LaValla

Today we tried eeling using a hinaki that Grayson's Mum had brought along. We placed some raw meet inside the hinaki and threw it into the creek.

We went off on our adventures and later returned to check the hinaki. We pulled the hinaki up using the rope only to find some of the meat was gone and no eel inside. We will try again next week.

Apo the Greedy Taniwha

 

Today we waited with anticipation  for Jeffery and Whaitaima to arrive, to perform their puppet show Apo the Greedy Taniwha. As attendance was a little low today we invited the New Entrant class from Tuakau Primary to join us.
 

After warming up with a couple of songs the two characters were introduced, Apo a greedy taniwha and Uia the biscuit boy. Through the story we were introduced to the guardian spirits.

During the show there were many opportunities for the children to participate in a variety of roles, as the forest, kumara, rocks that rumbled and created a volcano,the wind that blew the biscuit boy to safety in his waka and the fish from tangaroa's ocean.   

 

 

 

Our children have recently become familiar with the guardian spirits through the story 'In The Beginning.' The puppet show cemented their knowledge and familiarity with these and provided  opportunities for children to act and feel the importance of the characters in a purposeful, inspiring and fun filled way.

 







 

 

A day of discoveries at Sharda

What a great day we had today, exploring nature at the Sharda Centre. We were

accompanied by Hudson and Louise's Dads today and Adriana's Mum.

We made a couple of discoveries today, Adriana found a huge big fat worm and was

really excited when it began wiggling in her hand. Our other discovery wasn't quite

as easy to work out exactly what it was, we came across this very unusual object...

 

Louise suggested that maybe it was a worm cage.

We had a close look at it and discovered that it had erupted out of a toadstool,

when Cassandra investigated further with a stick it was a perfect circle completely

separate from the toadstool. We decided to leave it where we found it so we

can look to see if it is still there next week.

Kim's Lambs visit Kindergarten

Today we had a visit from Kim's little baby lambs, there was

great excitement and many of the children enjoyed having

the opportunity to pat and feed them their bottles.

 

Anneliys discovered that she was strong enough to lift one of the lambs. Once

the children had all had a pat Kim put them in the cage with Chocolate, he

was very excited to have some company for the day.
